Franklings Project 2023

by Suzy Small on 2023-08-16T11:54:00+10:00 in Multidisciplinary | 0 Comments

Franklings: Project is a co-curricular opportunity for PLC Sydney students to extend their literary interests and work on a project of their choice. We started this term with a whole day writing workshop facilitated by Dr Drayton. Another project opportunity was iTell, digital storytelling, which was delivered in the library as a series of workshops.

iTell: digital storytelling by Maggie Su (Year 8)

Have you ever found yourself immersed in the world of a story? Or wondered how a book or movie would turn out if it was written from another character’s perspective?

Welcome to the world of digital storytelling, where narratives are brought to life through the use of multimedia tools. At PLC Sydney, a group of Year 7&8 students have had the opportunity to participate in multiple iTell Digital Storytelling Workshops throughout weeks 1-6 of Term 3.

31st of July marked the beginning of a series of iTell workshops. During the first session, students were introduced to the idea of digital storytelling. Following that, on the 3rd-4th of August (Week 3), we participated in a 2-day workshop, where students created their own digital stories. The workshop started with a brainstorm of plots, followed by intense working sessions. Providing each other feedback along the way enabled us to continuously improve upon our works. Moreover, we explored the various film techniques and multimedia strategies that could be incorporated into our own films. The overall process was arduous yet genuinely rewarding, and the stacks of paper filled with ideas and sketches at the end of it all  is truly a reflection of the hard work that was put in!

From the initial drafts, to storyboarding activities, to the construction of videos, the experience is truly unparalleled. It has also been an absolute privilege to have been able to work alongside Dr Sukovic and Dr Drayton (lecturer at University of Sydney). We are also grateful for the assistance of Mrs Small. Though the 2023 iTell workshops have officially concluded, the memories created will live on through our stories!

Writing by Alyssa Li (Year 8)

The Franklings: Project was launched on 17the July and welcomed students from Years 7 to 11. This initiative offers an exceptional opportunity for students to engage in writing and digital storytelling projects through a captivating series of workshops. At its core, the Franklings Project presents an exciting journey of creative exploration.

At the start of the writing workshop, students are encouraged to delve into imaginative reading, selecting texts that resonate with their interests and spark their curiosity. Dr Drayton took us through a range of different types of writing and we were put in groups to discuss our individual ideas. Then, with the guidance of Dr Drayton, students will dive into the chosen narratives, extracting key elements that can be skillfully woven into their creations.

However, the project's scope goes beyond conventional storytelling boundaries. It serves as a gateway to a diverse universe of presentation techniques. Students are prompted to step outside their comfort zones, exploring alternative methods to convey their narratives. This empowers them to unlock their creative potential and communicate their ideas in innovative and engaging ways.

To sum up, the Franklings Project was a very engaging workshop and Dr. Drayton helped us explore interesting reading and different types of writing. It's a mix of reading, creating, writing, group work and using technology that'll help us do great things in school and beyond.
