The Macindoe Library is pleased to invite students from Years 7 to 9 to take part in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Shadow Judging project. Shadow Judging is a chance for young readers to share their thoughts about the titles which have been shortlisted for the CBCA 2024 Book of the Year Awards. Young people from all over Australia participate in the Shadow Judging process, providing a valuable insight into the books that they enjoy most, and an interesting comparison to the official Book of the Year judging results.
The Macindoe Senior Library team are looking for a group of students who will commit to reading all six shortlisted books in the 2024 “Older Readers” category, and then joining a conversation to choose their favourite. Participating students will also have the opportunity to produce a creative response to the books. The library will have copies of the six titles available to borrow, and will arrange meetings for participating students to share their thoughts about the books and choose a winner. Judges will meet regularly during Term 2 to discuss their reading progress.
By participating in the program, students will have the opportunity to build their personal literary appreciation, to develop imagination, critical thinking and an empathy and awareness of diverse opinions. The Shadow Judging program supports the development of reading breadth, depth and a sense that reading is a cultural practice where opinions are shared in a supportive reading community.
To sign up or find out more, please complete the Expression of Interest Form by Tuesday 30 April.
