In August we celebrated Australian Poetry Month. During one lunchtime, we read some poetry, and Aliza Ali (Year 9) shared with us her poem The unexpected growth. We are delighted to share it with you.
It started off small, just freshly born.
A tiny sprout peeking from my lawn.
Its wild roots like tentacles grew,
As it was showered by the morning dew.
It bathed in the sun’s golden rays,
And stood eagerly, filled with praise.
A week later it gained its first stem,
Then leaf and petal, oh what a gem!
It grew bigger, more sturdy than before,
And so it needed a bigger floor,
Rising higher now than the fencing,
But with its pride, it began condensing.
And so its leaves dragged it down,
Until it was nothing but sullied brown.
It had lost its shine, its petals turned dimmer,
But miraculously, it rained with a glimmer.
The hands which once kept it warm,
Had returned now in a different form,
Tiny fingers trimmed the wilted sprout,
And danced with it all about,
Seeping in rapidly the water it required,
It again flourished to something desired,
For all, it wished for was another chance,
Another shot to show its stance.
